Empty Set’s 2014 by the numbers

Each year we do an end-of-year review where I normally tally up some notable numbers.  This year we tried a video Year in Review, and in an effort to save screen time, I thought I’d post some numbers here instead. I don’t do the same numbers each year, but just some interesting ones:

Miles Scott traveled for work: 30, 902

That is a goodly number of miles, but it’s smaller than it used to be since Scott moved to San Diego in June 2014.  Now we don’t have the every-other-month trips back and forth. This number includes the PANDEMIC book tour and four conventions.

Cities visited: 12

With some visited more than once. (San Francisco, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Chicago, Boston, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Nashville, San Diego, Tallahassee, New York City, Atlanta & Denver.) No ex-US cities this year, but a few new stops along the way here in the States.

Novels published: 2

PANDEMIC was released in January from Random House, and THE CHAMPION was published in September by us. Both were girthy books. PANDEMIC was the last novel that was part of the five-book deal with Crown Publishing. After it’s release, Scott signed a three-book deal with Del Rey.

Anthology stories published: 5

Last year Scott was part of five anthologies/collaborations that made it to print, plus two or three more stories written for hire this year that will end up in books coming out next year. It was a particular focus for us, mostly because of the great collaborators (Jonathan Maberry, John Joseph Adams, Hugh Howey, Charlaine Harris and more) and because we had to shift gears with the new Del Rey deal coming in hot and heavy. We’ll be focused on longer form work in 2015.

Offices for Empty Set Entertainment: 1

And cities where Empty Set is based also equals one. After five years in business with a handshake agreement, we formalized into Empty Set Entertainment in 2013. In 2014 we combined our two separate offices in two different towns into one shiny new (to us) space in the basement of a 100 year old church in San Diego.

Number of Office Dogs: 1

We acquired our Morale Officer, Reesie, in June of 2014.  She’s a very good, if somewhat rambunctious employee. She stands sixteen inches tall, and weighs in at only 15 pounds, but she’s a pretty big deal around these parts.

Number of blog posts: not nearly enough

Lots of folks have trouble finding time to blog regularly, but I’d still like to do better. Nine posts in the year just isn’t enough. So this year I’m trying to do better. Scott’s joining me, and hopefully we’ll add some of our collaborators too once we get a little momentum.

That’s all the numbers for now. I have to get this posted (go me!) and get back to helping deliver great things for y’all.

Happy new year!

You don’t want to go overboard with blog posts, either. One post per month is about right IMHO.
